The NHS Race and Health Observatory has commissioned a review of culturally adapted dementia care in England. As part of this work, The Strategy Unit is inviting NHS staff, dementia professionals, researchers, commissioners and others working across dementia care and support to take part in online interviews.
The review is exploring how dementia services can better meet the needs of global majority communities. People from the global majority can experience delayed dementia diagnosis, reduced access to dementia services and treatment, and higher mortality following a dementia diagnosis. These inequities are shaped by complex and connected factors, including a lack of culturally appropriate dementia services and care.
As the number of people from global majority communities identified as living with dementia rises, there is a growing need to understand how services can be adapted to better support people to live well with dementia.
Who The Strategy Unit would like to hear from
The interviews will explore the delivery of dementia services, current challenges, and what may be needed to improve support for global majority communities.
The team would like to speak to people with a broad range of expertise from across the dementia pathway, including NHS staff supporting diagnosis and treatment, such as GPs, specialist clinicians, admiral nurses, old age psychiatrists, dementia care navigators, therapists, palliative care consultants and nurses.
They are also keen to hear from professionals supporting people to live well with dementia outside the NHS, including care home managers, social care staff, day centre staff, voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, and dementia trainers.
Researchers, commissioners, and others with specialist knowledge of dementia services and care are also encouraged to register their interest.
Participants do not need to be delivering culturally adapted dementia care currently. However, they should have professional knowledge or learnt experience of the inequities experienced by people from the global majority living with dementia and their carers.
What taking part involves
Interviews will take place online via Microsoft Teams and will last around 60 minutes. People selected to take part will be sent a participant information sheet with more details before deciding whether to proceed.
The Strategy Unit is also identifying examples of promising practice where culturally adapted dementia care is already being delivered. These examples may be written up as individual case studies. If you provide an intervention for a global majority community, you can indicate this on the expression of interest form.

About the term global majority
The term global majority is used because people often described in the UK through deficit based, minority or ethnic labels are, collectively, the majority of the world’s population. This term was agreed through discussion and reflection with communities by the partner organisation People Street.
Dementia Researcher is sharing this opportunity on behalf of The Strategy Unit and the NHS Race and Health Observatory.
