Research Showcase – Outdoor Activities and Wellbeing in Dementia
November 4 @ 12:00 pm - 12:45 pm

How can organised outdoor activities support the wellbeing of people living with dementia? And how does research change when people with dementia are collaborators rather than simply participants?
This livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work, methods and ideas.
In this session, Mason McLeod will present their PhD research exploring how engagement with organised outdoor activities shapes perceptions of wellbeing among people living with dementia in the Scottish Highlands.
Using Participatory Action Research (PAR), Mason places people living with dementia at the heart of their research. They work with a Lived Experience Advisory Panel to guide the project, ensuring that the voices, experiences and priorities of people with dementia inform how the research is designed and conducted.
Mason will also discuss their work with two organisations providing structured outdoor activities for people living with dementia. Through in-depth qualitative research, these settings will form comparative case studies examining how participation in outdoor activities can influence wellbeing and the experience of living with dementia within rural communities.
Mason is a PhD student at the Centre for Rural Health Sciences at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Their research brings together dementia, rural health, outdoor activity and participatory approaches to explore wellbeing while championing the right of people living with dementia to be actively involved in research.
Attendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion.
