Scottish Brain Sciences is a Life Sciences Company with Headquarters in Edinburgh and a research site in Aberdeen. We deliver clinical trials of new tests and treatments for a range of neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. We foster the rapid translation of research into practice to bring scientific progress out of the lab and into the community.
We’re looking for a proactive and compassionate Engagement Officer to help recruit participants onto our clinical trials and brain health studies. Based in Edinburgh or Aberdeen, you’ll play a pivotal role in finding, engaging and supporting people who may be eligible to take part in our research. You’ll be regularly speaking to people with Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or a family history of dementia and their families to give them clear, supportive pathways to join our early detection and intervention studies.
You’ll be responsible for recruiting and onboarding people to our research through calling potential participants, explaining our trials and services, setting up appointments and supporting people during visits. You’ll also be part of our community engagement activities including meeting with community groups and organisations to tell the Scottish Brain Sciences story and encourage people to participate in research.
We’re looking for someone who is confident speaking to people, comfortable having sensitive conversations, motivated by achieving recruitment targets, and creative in finding new ways to engage potential participants and communities.
Some of what you’ll be doing:
- Recruitment and Participant Onboarding
- Identify appropriate study opportunities for people on our registry.
- Calling potential participants from our register to explain research opportunities, eligibility, and next steps.
- Build rapport with potential participants and provide clear, empathetic, and accurate information about clinical studies and the benefits of research.
- Schedule screening appointments and annual study appointments ensuring participants have timely and accurate information.
- Welcome participants during visits, ensuring they feel comfortable during site visits.
- Support participants and families throughout the onboarding journey, signposting to wider resources where appropriate.
- Help achieve participant recruitment targets by proactively following up enquiries and identifying opportunities to improve recruitment.
- Maintain accurate records in participant databases and ensure compliance with internal procedures, trial protocols, and MHRA, GDPR and other relevant regulation.
- Outreach and Promotion
- Plan and deliver engagement events such as community talks, information sessions and health events.
- Build relationships with community organisations, health professionals, and charities (e.g. dementia cafes, carer groups) to increase awareness of research opportunities.
- Represent Scottish Brain Sciences at local and national events to raise awareness of brain health research and encourage participation.
- Support development of recruitment campaigns and new ideas to reach potential participants.
- Internal Collaboration:

- Work closely with the wider engagement and clinical research teams, as well as study sponsor. to align outreach and recruitment activities with trial needs.
- Share feedback from participants and communities to help improvement participant experience and recruitment approaches.
- Contribute to team meetings and share learning from recruitment and engagement activities.
- Follow established recruitment processes and systems, raising any issues and suggesting improvements to help optimise participant recruitment.
The skills, experience, and qualifications you’ll bring:
- Experience in community engagement, outreach, or participant recruitment (ideally within healthcare, charity, or research).
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build rapport with people from diverse backgrounds and confidence and compassion to have sensitive conversations with people who may be concerned about their health.
- Results oriented mindset and motivation to work towards recruitment targets.
- Great organisational skills to manage recruitment to multiple studies and follow up enquiries effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- A creative, proactive and collaborative attitude that thrives in a busy environment with a varied workload.
- Competence in Microsoft Office and with various electronic data-capture platforms.
- Familiarity with data collection, storage, and analysis tools (e.g., Excel).
Even better if you have:
- Knowledge of or interest in dementia, brain health, or clinical research.
- A degree, or equivalent experience, in the field of life science or marketing and communication.
- Experience using a CRM or customer management systems.
- Experience in outreach activities.

Pay: £24,000 – £28,000 per year (depending on experience)
