Including Sexual & Gender Minorities in Dementia Research

Join us, April 5 from 1 pm to 2:15 pm EST, for our next webinar event as part of the Division of Neuroscience’s new webinar series, “Minority Health and Health Disparities Research in Neuroscience.”
Dr Jason Flatt, our next series speaker, will present “Promoting Inclusion of Sexual and Gender Minority Populations in Alzheimer’s Disease and Aging Research”.
Three million or more adults aged 60 + live in the U.S. who identify as a sexual and gender minority (SGM) or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or another identity (LGBTQIA+). Less is known about Alzheimer’s disease risk and related health challenges among SGM ageing populations. We will discuss the current state of science on Alzheimer’s disease and related risk factors among SGM populations from multiple population-based and cohort studies. This webinar will also highlight best practices for conducting Alzheimer’s disease and aging research with SGM populations; provide recommendations for collecting data on sex assigned at birth, gender identity, sexual orientation, and intersex traits; and discuss how to support diverse early-career scholars to launch their careers in Alzheimer’s disease and aging research with SGM populations.
Dr. Jason D. Flatt (he/him/they/them) will serve as the next speaker for the “DN Minority Health and Health Disparities in Neuroscience Webinar Series”. Dr. Flatt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Health at UNLV. His current research works to better understand concerns and needs of diverse sexual and gender minority populations, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual as well as additional identities living with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and their care providers. He is the PI of the career award (NIA K01AG056669), “The Epidemiology of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias in Sexual and Gender Minority Older Adults: Identifying Risk and Protective Factors” and received the 2020 Early-Stage Investigator Award from the NIH Sexual and Gender Minority Research Office for this research. He is also currently Co-PI (Anderson, Flatt, Wharton; NIA R24AG066599) on the RISE (Research Inclusion Supports Equity) Registry project, the first NIA-funded registry to recruit, engage, and retain SGM older adults with ADRD and SGM ADRD caregivers.
