Qualitative AI Course: Generative AI in NVivo and MAXQDA

How do you bring generative AI into qualitative analysis without letting the tools drive the method? This hands-on online course from NCRM shows you how to integrate AI capabilities into established qualitative software, and what that means for your practice.
This is Module 3 of NCRM’s Navigating Qualitative AI course, led by Dr Christina Silver. Through demonstrations, guided exercises and discussion, you’ll work with sample data to explore a series of analytic tasks, and consider the methodological implications of using AI with different types of data and at different stages of qualitative analysis. The focus is on existing qualitative software, using NVivo and MAXQDA as the core examples.
Session 1: Principles of integrating AI tools into qualitative analysis (16 November, 13:30–16:45)
- Overview of what established qualitative software can do, with and without AI
- Making sure your analytic methods drive the use of AI tools
- Hands-on exercises using NVivo
Session 2: Exploring MAXQDA’s AI tools for qualitative analysis (18 November, 13:30–16:45)
- Overview of MAXQDA’s tools
- Hands-on exercises bringing AI into a qualitative analysis process, using literature, transcripts and open-ended survey responses
By the end of the course participants will:
- Understand where AI tools can be used at different stages of the qualitative analysis workflow
- Understand the methodological consequences of using AI tools, both the potential and the risks
- Identify ways of using AI tools that keep the approach human-centred
The course is aimed at students and researchers interested in qualitative analysis, in any sector or discipline. It is pitched at intermediate level.
You must have completed Module 1 before taking this module. Module 1, Mindsets for considering the use of AI for Qualitative Research, runs on 30 September and 1 October and again on 2 and 4 November.
THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT OVER TWO AFTERNOONS AND EQUATES TO ONE TEACHING DAY FOR PAYMENT PURPOSES.
Cost:
The fee per teaching day is:
• £60 per day for students registered at any university
• £150 per day for staff at academic institutions, Research Councils researchers, public sector staff, staff at registered charity organisations and recognised research institutions
• £350 per day for all other participants
In the event of cancellation by the delegate a full refund of the course fee is available up to two weeks prior to the course. No refunds are available after this date.
