Research Showcase – Wearable Technology in Depression and Dementia

What can wearable technology tell us about the everyday experiences of older people living with depression or dementia? Could continuously collected data reveal changes that conventional clinical assessments miss?
This livestream is part of the Dementia Researcher weekly Showcase series. Each week we host a 45 minute online session bringing researchers together to share their work, methods, and ideas.
In this session, Dr Ta-Wei Guu will explore how wearable technologies can be used to better understand behavioural patterns, sleep disturbances, and responses to treatment in older people experiencing depression and dementia.
The session will consider how data collected outside traditional clinical settings could provide a more continuous picture of changes in behaviour and health over time. Ta-Wei will also discuss plans to develop a technology-enabled longitudinal cohort, using wearable technology to study ageing populations and investigate how patterns observed over months and years might inform future research and clinical practice.
Dr Ta-Wei Guu is a Consultant Psychiatrist and Assistant Professor based at CMUBH in Taiwan, with an affiliation to the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London. His work brings together psychiatry, ageing research, and digital technologies to explore new approaches to understanding mental health and dementia in later life.
Attendees can expect a practical and research focused session with time for questions and discussion.
