JUAN HENAO: Set boundaries and invest in hobbies

Postdoctoral researcher in atmospheric modelling at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada.

I studied for my undergraduate degree in Medellín, Colombia, and then moved to Germany to pursue a master’s in environmental engineering. I returned to Medellín for my PhD, and a year ago, I joined the Desert Research Institute in Nevada.

Working in several countries has allowed me to explore various schools of thought and scientific approaches, and to access more funding opportunities, which can be limited in Colombia. However, emotionally and personally, it hasn’t been easy, especially because I have a family. I’m married and we had twins last August — a boy and a girl. It’s hard to emigrate with an entire family, so they’re still in Colombia.

When I applied for the position at the Desert Research Institute, we didn’t know we were going to have the twins, so we had no plan in place. To this day, I couldn’t tell you how many different plans we’ve had — we’ve had to constantly adapt.

I’ve been fortunate to be able to work remotely, which has allowed me to travel back and forth. That’s the strategy we’ve found to cope with the situation, and although it’s a privilege, it has also been really tough. I don’t want to miss out on anything in my children’s lives and their growth, but that means travelling between the two countries about four times per year.

Travelling so much is a major financial and physical stressor — it’s exhausting. That constant back-and-forth has made it hard for me to feel immersed or integrated into US culture; I feel like I don’t belong here or there. Balancing life and work is also tough — setting boundaries is hard when I either have a full-time family life or am away for work. When I’m with family, it’s difficult to carve out space to focus on work; when I’m away, it’s hard not to let work take over entirely.

What has helped me is getting involved in activities that I enjoy and that have nothing to do with work. I’m about to start playing in a soccer tournament in Reno and I’ve been putting time into making friends, exercising and exploring new hobbies.
