Tell us a little about yourself:
I used to be a researcher working in the field of neurodegeneration. I completed both my PhD and post-doc at The University of Sheffield, where I worked on Alzheimer’s disease and ALS. I may have moved on from the lab, however my love for astrocytes, the neuron-supporting cells, remains! I am very passionate about research, supporting ECRs, and supporting everyone affected by dementia any way I can. I also have two naughty (but cute) tuxedo cats, and love to spend my weekends doing book-reading marathons with my sisters.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I am a huge BTS fan and even flew across the world to see them perform live!
Why did you choose to work in dementia research?
Dementia is UK’s biggest killer, and there is no cure. Neurodegenerative diseases devastate lives of millions of people around the world and I wanted to dedicate my career to helping in any way that I can. For me, this was by utilising my passion for research and teaching others about research findings. I also find brains, science, and research in general very interesting, and love the field I am working in!
What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is different, has different experiences and circumstances, so I would advise focusing on your own ambitions and celebrating all of your achievements! Comparison is the thief of joy – enjoy your research project and your career path, focus on your goals, stay positive, and you will get there.
What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
I’ve just started ‘Six Crimson Cranes‘ by Elizabeth Lim, a light but immersive read
Favourite film of all time?
The Shawshank Redemption — the brilliance of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman
Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?
Baking bread and cooking, with Taylor Swift vinyls playing in the background or reading!
