Name:

Dr Zsofia Laszlo

Job Title:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Place of work / study:

University of Dundee

Area of Research:

My research interest is in understanding the cellular and molecular changes in neurodegenerative diseases, especially focusing on Motor Neuron Disease

How is your research funded:

Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

Tell us a little about yourself:

I grew up in Hungary, Budapest. Neuroscience has been an interest of mine since my childhood. Therefore I studied biology and neuroscience at the university. In my first year, I joined to the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory in the Insitute of Experimental Medicine and I studied different synaptic signalling pathways during brain development and disease. After I finished my PhD in 2020, I joined Dr Henstridge’s lab at the University of Dundee. Currently I am a Lady Edith Wolfson Junior Fellow by the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA) who support my postdoctoral research focusing on cellular interactions in ALS.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I had been dancing for 18 years before I moved to Scotland and travelled across Europe to attend different championships with my team.

Why did you choose to work in Dementia research?

After my PhD, I wanted to focus on diseases which has huge impact on people’s life and our society. Synaptic dysfunction and the decrease in synapse number are correlated with cognitive decline and shared features of nearly all neurodegenerative diseases. I joined the Henstridge lab to investigate the molecular mechanism of synapse loss, especially in MND.

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Find that specific research topic/area which excites you and provides motivation, even if you need to try so many different routes, don’t be afraid.

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

I am a mom of a very energetic toddler, so I don’t have to much time to read but the last book that I read was The Storyteller by Dave Grohl.
