Jennifer Bray
Name:
Jennifer Bray
Job Title:
Research Assistant
Place of work / study:
University of Worcester
Area of Research:
I work across a variety of projects aiming to improve quality of life for people affected by dementia, with a particular focus recently on supportive environmental design and ways to support family carers providing personal care.
How is your work funded:
Each project is funded separately, with recent funders including NIHR, Alzheimer’s Society, Historic England and the Big Lottery Fund.
Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a Research Assistant with the Association for Dementia Studies and have worked in project research and evaluation since 2001. After joining the Association for Dementia Studies in 2010, I have worked across a number of research projects and enjoys the variety that this brings to my role. The diverse nature of my role has enabled me to explore dementia in different care settings and in relation to a variety of topic areas. This has enabled me to develop expertise in dementia and sight loss, intergenerational aspects of dementia awareness, and the use of technology with people living with dementia. My recent focus has involved supportive environmental design and ways to support family carers providing personal care.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I learned how to crochet a few years ago and it’s kind of taken over my spare time. I would say that I’m addicted to collecting wool, but I do actually use it!
Why did you choose to work in dementia:
I already had research experience, but didn’t feel like it was actually making a difference. Working in dementia, you can see the impact and know that even if it’s only on a small scale you are helping.
What single piece of of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
Never be afraid to ask for help. No-one knows everything so it’s better to be honest and ask for help than struggle on your own and get stressed out.
What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
The Salt Path by Raynor Winn. It’s a tough read at times but an engaging story set against beautiful scenery.
Favourite film of all time?
The Princess Bride
Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?
Getting out into nature and being away from the internet.
