Like many PhD students, I left my home country — in my case, moving from Singapore to Australia — to pursue my studies. Although being in a new place can offer great opportunities, it also poses challenges — for example, loneliness. The environment I found myself in at the Australian National University in Canberra felt so unfamiliar, and starting my demography PhD during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 only made matters worse.
My experience has shed light on some contributors to loneliness — and how to relieve it.
