My first interviews today are in Antwerp (yep I finally make it to Belgium), heading to the Expertise Centre for Dementia Flanders meeting Dr Jan Steyaert, Jurn Verschraegen (Director of the Centre) and Dr Joni Gilissen to discuss person-centred dementia care. I spent time with students and finally headed away as the sun was setting and ending the day in my high-vis jacket!

Day thirteen of my skating road trip, and I am in Amsterdam UMC to meet with Professor Wiesje can der Flier & Ilse Oostveen hear about her brilliant work and the ABOARD Project. “Stopping Alzheimer’s before it starts” - This is the slogan of a this nationwide, collaborative project in the Netherlands, led by Wiesje van der Flier from Alzheimer Center Amsterdam. ABOARD, short for “A personalized medicine approach for Alzheimer’s disease”, is a public-private project which aims to prepare for a future in which Alzheimer’s disease is stopped before dementia has started.

This is realised by: improving timely and accurate diagnosis, developing individualised risk profiles, initiating nationwide data collection, with a focus on patient-reported outcomes, and a focus on prevention strategies by creating awareness around dementia and brainhealth.

In addition, the readiness of the Dutch healthcare system for disease-modifying treatment will be evaluated. The ABOARD project has a duration of five years.

Today I cover a massive 50km skating for almost 4 hours, with stops for three interviews with Professor Raymond Koopmans (Nursing Home Medicine), he tries to answer questions such as: How does dementia develop? What is the patient's life expectancy? Does the patient develop problematic behaviour? Does comorbidity occur (interaction with other diseases)? Also Dr Gijs Jansen from Radboud University. Joke Boss and Professor Rose-Marie Droes.

It's been an eventful day! Lots to reflect on... but to recap, I swallowed lots of bugs, I hit the 200km mark! I also did an online interview with Professor Martin Orrell, and did the first of my own interviews (moving from interviewer to interviewee) for the documentary my friends (and support crew) are making - this was harder than I thought it would be... not talking about dementia in the abstract of something I research, but through my own experiences - giving me even more respect for those who give their time to talk to me, and participate in research. After all that and more skating, I hit some problems, issues with skates, the darkness and missing an interview - it all became very real today, and the challenges are becoming clear, and there is still 25 days to go - need to power through.

So I recorded this update before my last update (if that make sense) so if you're watching these in the order published... you will know that I am out of the car and back on the soggy roads! Feeling blessed to be making connections and getting some amazing community support for this journey of 1000km on Roller Skates for #dementiaawareness World Alzheimer's Month.

It was amazing to interview Dr Franka Meiland in Café ’t Tolhuis. Franka is an Assistant Professor of Aging and Later Life at Amsterdam UMC - and the cafe is an amazing historic place. It has been around since 1834 - the toll was collected here to enter the roads towards Baarn and Utrecht. In 1898, the barriers were removed again and not long after, this building was transformed into a café for the first time. Although little has changed in the building and the cozy and snug atmosphere within, we of course move with the times with our extensive range - the staff were incredible and support supportive.

Saturday involved last minute packing, then it was skating 41km to visit my brilliant supporters at Alzheimer Nederland, a great interview with Inge Rikkers-Pluijlaar, then an online interview with Lilian Frijters and a visit to my wonderful friend Ellen van den Beld.

So we're off to a great start!

The day started with a realistion that the tracking software to help earn my World Record was going to be an issue.... but I managed to skate 41km, and do my first interview. Stay tuned...

If you didn't know already... I submitted my PhD thesis literally just before starting this trip. So its been a SUPER busy few weeks, finishing revisions whilst also planning the trip... and today at the end of my first day, I got THE BEST news! My PhD Thesis has been approved... so tonight its time to celebrate (I'll just stress about my viva along the rest of the way).

Dr Pascale Heins is helping an app she created to help families keep track of their loved ones living with dementia - I don't have #dementia but there is a good chance I might get lost, and it might just be useful for you to also see where I am.

Golnaz Atefi, a PhD student from Maastricht University, is embarking on a unique 1,000km roller skating journey from Amsterdam to Geneva to highlight an important issue in dementia research. Her studies have shown that when data doesn’t adequately represent diverse populations, the effectiveness of treatments and innovations can be limited, leaving some people without the care they need.

To bring attention to this, Golnaz will spend the whole of September, which also happens to be World Alzheimer’s Month, roller skating across Europe, meeting with researchers, healthcare professionals, and community members to discuss her findings, to advocate for more inclusive research practices and to chat about their understanding and experiences of dementia.

She plans to share her experiences through daily vlogs on the Dementia Researcher YouTube channel, giving viewers a firsthand look behind the scene of her journey. Additionally, her trip will be documented in a film by Jale Yekta and Frough Soori, who will travel with her (with waterproof clothing, first aid kit, snacks and spare clothes to hand).
