Reading Time: 2 minutes

Milbotix Ltd has announced the launch of SmartSocks DISCOVERY, an innovative wearable platform designed to support research into neurocognitive, movement and sleep disorders. Developed in Bristol and supported by Alzheimer’s Society, this new tool provides researchers with an accessible way to collect high-quality physical and physiological data using socks as the data acquisition device.

SmartSocks DISCOVERY is the first product in the SmartSocks line aimed specifically at the research community. It builds on a decade of research and development by the health-tech startup Milbotix Ltd. Comfortable, unobtrusive and machine washable, the socks capture real-time data including electrodermal activity, heart rate and variability, skin temperature and motion.

The development of SmartSocks has been supported by the Alzheimer’s Society Accelerator Programme, and Milbotix also collaborates with the UK Dementia Research Institute Centre for Care Research and Technology at Imperial College London.

Two versions of the new product are available:

  • SmartSocks®DISCOVERY Kit (£999): Includes two removable sensors for continuous 24/7 data collection or simultaneous measurement from both feet.
  • SmartSocks®DISCOVERY Starter Kit (£499): Designed for MSc and PhD students, this version includes a single sensor.

Both kits come with several pairs of SmartSocks® and access to a web dashboard for data collection and analysis.

Dr Zeke Steer, Founder and CEO of Milbotix, said:

“Today is a huge day for Milbotix. I am extremely proud to be launching SmartSocks®DISCOVERY. SmartSocks® represent a new paradigm for capturing physical and physiological data from research participants who find wrist-worn devices uncomfortable, stigmatising or difficult to use. Researchers are using our socks to study conditions like dementia and Parkinson’s disease, autism spectrum disorder, sleep and movement disorders and even incontinence.”

SmartSocks®DISCOVERY is now available to purchase online at milbotix.com/shop.
