Name:

Katherine Lawler

Job Title:

Lecturer in Dementia Studies

Place of work / study:

Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, University of Tasmania, Australia

Area of research:

Knowledge and attitudes of allied health clinicians regarding dementia care, family-assisted therapy, modifiable risk factors for dementia.

How is your work currently funded:

I’m new to academic life, so mostly funded by the University, and through the teaching component of my role.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’m a physiotherapist with 20 years of experience working in the public hospital sector. I have a long-suffering husband who has survived me doing a PhD part time for the past 8 years, and a 12-year-old daughter who feels like I’ve been studying for her whole life.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I’m no fun, as I’ve only just emerged from the PhD vortex!

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

I’ve always been keen to work with people others are not necessarily interested in. In my 20s I volunteered in heroin detox for that same reason, but as a clinician I realised over time that older people with dementia are some of the most marginalised in our society.
