Tell us a little about yourself:
I joined the Sheffield Neurovascular Lab in 2015 as a research technician. I’m now a post-doc studying neurovascular coupling in Alzheimer’s Disease. I use a range of techniques including 2-photon imaging, electrophysiology and behavioural tests to observe deficits in cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer’s disease. When not in the lab, I enjoy playing rugby and fishing.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I hate the taste of cucumber.
Why did you choose to work in dementia research?
I have always been fascinated with how the brain works, but the more I learned about the brain the more I discovered the frightening ways it can go wrong. With the prevalence of dementia increasing rapidly, I was impassioned to explore this area further and hopefully help in some way to come up with new treatments.
What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
Networking and public speaking skills are almost as important as research skills. The best way to improve them is to throw yourself into as many opportunities to practice them as possible.
What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. I would definitely recommend it, it has given me an entirely different perspective on historical and modern society.
Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?
Either playing rugby or fishing, depending on the time of year
Favourite film of all time?
The Other Guys
