Tell us a little about yourself:
I’ve had a long career, initially training in General Practice before working as an Old Age Psychiatrist in Tayside. I’ve always had an interest in research, and in the latter part of my career, I worked with others to help set up and oversee a Scottish network conducting clinical trials in dementia and other neuroprogressive disorders. For a time, I was also a carer for my mother, who had vascular dementia before she passed away. These days, I enjoy spending time looking after my wonderful grandchildren.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I had a hole-in-one aged 17. 50 years later I’m still trying for my second! So if at first you succeed, give up?
Why did you choose to work in dementia:
Before entering the field of psychiatry, most of my work was with older people, not necessarily by design! When working with them, it was clear to me that those with problems with their mental health were poorly served, and those who had dementia often had physical health needs overlooked. I tried to help restore some of that balance
What single piece of of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
The end result is not always the be all and end all of all research. In many cases staff learn new skills and techniques which can benefit their professional development. Some projects might fail, but not all is lost.
