Using Smartphones in Multi-Modal Qualitative Research

In this short tutorial from the National Centre for Research Methods, you’ll learn how smartphones can be used to support multimodal qualitative research. From combining video, audio, and text data to reaching marginalised or hard to engage participants, this presentation introduces practical ways to design flexible, participant-led studies using everyday digital tools.

Drawing on real-life examples, including research with asylum seekers and people experiencing homelessness, the session also touches on key ethical considerations, design tips, and what to include in funding applications.

What’s covered:
  • What is multimodal qualitative research?
  • Why use smartphones in qualitative studies?
  • Examples of app-based diaries, photo prompts and audio logs
  • Working with hard to reach populations
  • Ethical and safety considerations
  • Guidance for funding and ethics applications

The National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) delivers research methods training through short courses and free online resources.
