In this webinar Professor Ruth Hancock analyses the market for care homes for older people using Care Quality Commission and other data.
A well-functioning market for care home places for older people is important if Local Authorities are to discharge their duty to support older people with care needs. Considerable controversy exists over Local Authorities’ roles in shaping the market and meeting the fees of care home residents who are eligible for Local Authority funding. In this webinar they illustrate how data about care homes from the Care Quality Commission, can be analysed to shed light on some aspects of the care home market. They also illustrate how those data can be enhanced by combining them with data from other sources such as NHS Digital, LaingBuisson market surveys and ONS locality data. Two topics are be used to highlight the potential of the data: competition in the care home market; and the dynamics of the care home market.
Ruth is Professor of Economics of Health & Welfare at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia. Ruth’s research interests are in the economic, health and social policy implications of individual and population ageing with a particular focus on financial provision for later life and provision for long-term care needs. Prior to this Ruth spent ten years as a government economist in the (then) Department of Health and Social Security and a period in economic consultancy. She has published widely in top journals such as Ageing and Society, Review of Income and Wealth, Health Economics Policy and Law, Journal of Poverty and Social Justice, and Economics.
