Bridge the Gap: A Podcast Every Researcher Should Hear

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Brought to you by the Young Peoples’ Working Group at the University of Manchester, Bridge the Gap is a podcast about involving young people in research, one episode at a time.

Hosted by YPWG members Ahmad, Alma, Faiqa, Fatema and Sadia, the series explores what involvement really means, why it matters, and how young people can contribute to designing and producing research studies. Episodes are short, clear and accessible, making complex ideas easier to understand.

While the focus is on young people’s involvement in research, the topics covered are relevant to all researchers, at every career stage, and even those working in dementia.

Recent episodes explore questions such as:

  • What is involvement and why should you do it?
  • What is jargon and how can we overcome it?
  • What are the different types of involvement?
  • What is quantitative research?
  • What are descriptive and inferential statistics?
  • How do we minimise bias in research?
  • What is critical analysis?
  • Why is impact important?

These are fundamental concepts that underpin good research practice. Whether you are a PhD student finding your feet, an early career researcher refining your approach, or a senior academic thinking about engagement and impact, there is something here worth listening to.

The tone is friendly, practical and refreshingly clear. It is a reminder that good research communication is not about making things sound complicated. It is about making them understandable.

The Bridge the Gap podcast is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research and forms part of the NIHR Bridge the Gap initiative.

If you are interested in improving how you involve people in your work, or simply want a concise refresher on core research concepts, this series is well worth adding to your playlist.
