Anna Marie Rosická

Name:

Anna Marie Rosická

Job title:

PhD Student

Place of work / study:

Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Area of Research:

I study the effects of ageing and modifiable risk factors on brain health, using gamified cognitive assessments and large-scale data from the smartphone app Neureka.

How is your work funded?

Frontiers for the Future Project Grant from Science Foundation Ireland, awarded to my supervisor CM Gillan

Tell us a little about yourself:

I love working at the intersection of health tech and brain science. In my PhD, I use data from thousands of users of the smartphone app Neureka to study the lifestyle and health factors linked to dementia and the effects of ageing on cognition. Before starting my PhD, I received a master’s degree in psychology from the Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, and gained industry experience working as a user experience researcher in IT. My interests include science communication, writing, and music.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I like to drink filtered decaf coffee in the afternoon and call it my placebo coffee.

Why did you choose to work in dementia?

I see dementia as one of the biggest challenges our society is facing and find deep meaning in trying to make people’s lives a bit more liveable in the face of this challenge. From a “pragmatic” scientific perspective, I am fascinated by how brain deterioration is linked to very measurable deficits in cognition – a relationship seemingly much clearer than the link between brain and mental disorders, which makes me feel a bit more hopeful that ground-breaking discoveries must be just behind the next bend of the road.

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Choose your supervisor wisely.

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

I am currently reading “Sputnik Sweetheart” by Haruki Murakami. It is not the best one I’ve read by the author but I still enjoy it. I would, however, definitely recommend reading for pleasure when not reading for dementia research 🙂
