My recent PhD was funded by the University of the West of Scotland, Erskine Veterans Charity and Alzheimer Scotland
Tell us a little about yourself:
As an artist-educator, occupational therapist and early career researcher, I have wide-ranging experience of working collaboratively with diverse populations in various settings. My recent PhD Action Research study aimed to understand meaning in activities and interactions with people living with advanced dementia in a care home setting using creative methods. I am passionate about human rights and finding flexible and adaptable ways to work with under-represented groups to acknowledge and amplify the voices of those with lived experience.
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I used to volunteer for a hospital radio show where I presented a punk show
Why did you choose to work in dementia?
I find working with people with dementia, their family members and staff interesting because creative and flexible approaches are often needed to understand each person’s unique experiences. I love the challenge of finding different ways of communicating and ‘doing with’ this population to make connections and enhance understanding. I have a strong desire to work with people with dementia in ways that empower and respect them, uphold their human rights and recognise and validate their strengths and contributions.
