A new data challenge is offering researchers the opportunity to use decades of clinical trial data to investigate Alzheimer’s disease progression, subtypes and sex differences.
The Alzheimer’s Trials Data Discovery Challenge has been launched by the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative in partnership with Vivli and with support from Alzheimer’s Research UK.
The Challenge will award a total of $75,000 in prizes to research teams working with the new Integrated Alzheimer’s Disease Clinical Trial Dataset. This fully harmonised resource combines placebo-arm data supplied by AstraZeneca, Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Roche and Takeda from 11 Alzheimer’s drug trials.
Although the trials did not produce the hoped-for treatment advances, the data collected remain highly valuable. Bringing the information together in a standardised dataset gives researchers greater statistical power to investigate questions that may have been difficult to address using individual trial datasets.
The Challenge will focus on three research tracks:
- Sex differences in Alzheimer’s disease
- Rates of disease progression
- Alzheimer’s disease subtyping and heterogeneity
The first-place team in each track will receive a $25,000 cash prize. Successful teams may also have the opportunity to publish their findings in a high-impact journal and present their research at a major Alzheimer’s disease conference, with support from the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative.
Who can apply?
The Challenge is aimed primarily at early- to mid-career research teams interested in Alzheimer’s disease subtypes, progression or sex differences.
Teams must include, as a minimum, a principal investigator sponsor and a statistician. Applicants should be ready to undertake a substantial data analysis project using a dataset designed to support research at a scale that may not previously have been possible.
Up to 24 teams will be selected to participate, with eight teams working within each research track.
How to apply
Research teams should submit a letter of intent by 1 September 2026. Applications may close earlier if all available places are filled.
