Dr Ahmad Al Khleifat

Name:

Dr Ahmad Al Khleifat

Job Title:

Senior Research Fellow

Place of work / study:

King’s College London

Area of research?

My two main research areas of interest are complex disease genetics research and developing strategies for delivering precision medicine. My group is focus on multiomics comparative analysis using big data to develop methods and diagnostic tools for researchers and clinicians. These will be tools for gene identification and biomarkers in affected individuals to help improve diagnostic testing, mapping disease progression and personalised healthcare.

How is your research funded:

Our group is fortunate to receive support from several outstanding organisations, including the MND Association’s Lady Edith Wolfson Fellowship and the ALS Association’s Milton Safenowitz Senior Fellowship. LifeArc has been a key supporter of our drug discovery efforts, alongside funding from The Alan Turing Institute, the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre, the MRC, the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, and the Dementia Consortium.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am the MND Association Lady Edith Wolfson and ALS Association’s Milton Safenowitz Senior Fellow. I trained in medicine in Egypt and earned my MSc and PhD in Clinical Neuroscience from King’s College London. My research group uses big data for precision medicine, optimizing clinical trials, and enhancing drug discovery. Research Focus: Complex disease genetics and precision medicine Big data application and AI in clinical trials and drug discovery Development of proteomic-based biomarkers for Neurodegeneration Structural variation analysis in genomics I chair the Trans-Ancestral Genetics working group in Project MinE and lead the Drug Discovery and Trials Optimisation Working Group in the DEMON network, applying AI to dementia research. I co-founded the Alan Turing Institute Interest Group in Precision Dementia Medicine and the Alzheimer’s Association group on AI for Precision Dementia Medicine. I am an EDI Theme Representative at the NIHR Maudsley BRC.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I am a dad to two sons (11 and 5 years old). I devote my spare time to my family where I love to cook, teach and spend quality time with them. Additionally, I am a bass guitar player and I create documentary movies, some of which were short listed for an Al Jazeera best short documentary category about underground metal music in Egypt.

Why did you choose to work in dementia research?

I believe neurodegenerative conditions are curable and am driven to find effective treatments.

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Believe in yourself!

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

I’m currently reading Azazeel by Youssef Ziedan. It’s about an Egyptian monk who journeys to the Holy Land, grappling with faith, doubt, and the complexities of human nature. The novel beautifully challenges rigid religious ideologies while exploring the delicate, often conflicted, essence of being human.

Favourite film of all time?

The Addams Family

Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?

I’m passionate about music and play the bass guitar. I have a particular love for instrumental rock—it’s where I find my rhythm and inspiration.
