Tell us a little about yourself:
I was brought up in Kent (UK) and moved to Southampton for undergraduate medical training, before sticking around pretty much ever since! This included an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship between 2009-2012, an Alzheimer’s Research UK Clinical Research Fellowship (2014-2017) and a PhD in clinical neuroscience (2019). My main interest is in exploring the role of inflammation in dementia using clinical and post-mortem studies, and testing in testing biomarkers. In addition to my academic role, I am an honorary consultant in Old Age Psychiatry at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, where I conduct memory clinics including providing a tertiary service for people with Lewy body dementia. I am also a principal investigator for several non-commercial clinical studies at the Memory Assessment and Research Centre in Southampton (www.marctrials.org).
Tell us a fun fact about yourself:
I used to be a real thrill-seeker in my younger days (sky diving, static line parachuting, bungee jumping, scuba diving etc.), but since having kids my life has become significantly more mundane!!
Why did you choose to work in dementia:
To help find new ways to diagnose and treat dementia.
What single piece of of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
Your career path will have twists and turns, ups and downs, periods of success and huge challenges – but keep at it!
