National Institute for Health Research
We are the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) we fund health and care research and translate discoveries into practical products, treatments, devices and procedures, involving patients and the public in all our work.
We ensure the NHS is able to support the research of other funders to encourage broader investment in, and economic growth from, health research. We work with charities and the life sciences industry to help patients gain earlier access to breakthrough treatments and we train and develop researchers to keep the nation at the forefront of international research.
Spotlight on the Research Design Service
In an increasingly competitive research environment, securing funding to conduct health and social care research can be difficult and time consuming. The NIHR Research Design Service (RDS) offers advice on all aspects of formulating a research proposal, including methodology, statistics, health economics and support for Patient and Public Involvement in research. With real experts on hand the RDS knows what funders are looking for; their team has many years’ experience of making applications to NIHR and other funding programmes. They also understand the challenges of the modern research environment; and have active staff in a broad range of projects.
Who do can they help?
The RDS can help you if you are:
- developing grant applications for applied health or social care research
- applying for personal fellowships
- writing applications to national, open, peer-reviewed funding streams.
They support a broad range of people, including:
- doctors, nurses and allied health professionals
- patients and service users
- academics and NHS and social care managers.
The RDS priority is to support applications to NIHR research funding streams and fellowships. However, they will also support applications to Research Councils and other open, national, peer-reviewed funding programmes. To find access support, please contact your local RDS office.
The national RDS network operates from 10 regional centres across England.
