Tell us a little about yourself:
I am a Patient and Public Involvement Officer at the NRS Neuroprogressive and Dementia Network in Scotland. I collaborate with the Network’s PPI group, Partners in Research, to enhance dementia research by facilitating meaningful stakeholder contributions and fostering opportunities to shape and guide research. My background is in Psychology, research support and dementia and I moved into public engagement after completing my Masters in Science Communication and Public Engagement. I am passionate about bridging the gaps between research and communities, supporting members of the public to contribute their lived-experience and engaging new audiences in science.

I studied a semester in Hawaii during my undergraduate degree
Why did you choose to work in dementia:
My first foray into working with people living with dementia was as a healthcare assistant at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, where I enjoyed spending time with patients. This experience, coupled with my interest in cognitive psychology, particularly episodic memory and emotional memory developed during my undergraduate studies, led me to want understand not just the underlying mechanics and causes of dementia, but the experience of dementia from the person’s perspective.
What single piece of of advice would you give to an early career researcher?
Networks are important but focus on building kind and collaborative networks, and be that for others.
What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?
With three little boys, I don’t get much time for that just now unfortunately – but I have an ever building list for when I do!
Favourite film of all time?
Not sure I can choose a firm favourite film but I can for a TV series – Battlestar Galactica (2004-09 series) 🙌
Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?
I enjoy listening to music and spending time with family and friends
