Caring well for someone in the later stages of dementia draws on many disciplines at once. This recording is from the October 2026 meeting of the EMPOWER Dementia Network+ Special Interest Group on Palliative and End-of-Life Care in Dementia, held online on 6 October.
The group brings together researchers, health and care professionals, community organisations, carers and people with lived experience. They meet a few times a year to share experience, talk through the challenges in end-of-life care for people with dementia, and look for chances to work together. This session heard from three people who see that care from different sides:
- Dr Niki Fitzgerald, Consultant in Geriatric Medicine
- Dr Marie-Claire Rooney, Consultant in Palliative Medicine
- Rosina Goldsmith, Service Lead and Senior Admiral Nurse, Bromley
Between them they cover hospital medicine, specialist palliative care and the support given to families in the community. That makes the recording useful for anyone researching or working in dementia care towards the end of life, and especially for early career researchers who want to understand how those services fit together in practice.
EMPOWER Dementia Network+ is co-led by King’s College London and the University of West London. It is funded by the ESRC, NIHR and Alzheimer’s Society, and works to tackle inequalities in dementia care. Recordings of earlier SIG sessions, including the June 2026 meeting, are on the EMPOWER website.
