There is no single route into science, and very few researchers begin their careers knowing exactly where they will end up. Some are drawn in by a particular subject, some by a question they cannot stop thinking about, and others through chance, personal experience or a good teacher.
In this short film from Alzheimer’s Research UK, dementia researchers share the advice they would give to anyone thinking about becoming a scientist. It was originally produced for Dementia Explained, a resource created to help children and young people understand dementia, but the message is just as relevant to anyone considering a research career.
Science needs curiosity, patience and people who are prepared to keep learning. It also needs different backgrounds, skills and ways of looking at a problem. Nobody is expected to have every answer at the beginning. Most research careers start with an interest in something and the willingness to see where the questions lead.
