Is AI eroding PhD students’ critical thinking and analysis skills?

From Nature Careers

Graduate students increasingly use artificial-intelligence tools to search the literature, design presentations, generate code and summarize papers. But many researchers fear they could erode the very skills a doctorate is meant to build.

Nature’s careers team assembled three panellists to discuss the technology’s impact in a 60-minute webinar.

The event, held last month, was hosted by science journalist Julie Gould and included a live Q&A session. It is now available to watch.

The panellists were PhD student Omar Shabana at the University of Cambridge, UK; Yanjun Gao, a research group leader at the Centre for Health AI at the University of Colorado Anschutz; and Thane Campbell, dean of education at London-based Deep Science Ventures, which runs a PhD programme in which scientists tackle global challenges by building deep-tech companies.
