Tell us a little about yourself:

I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 2000 and began my career in critical care nursing at Sunderland Royal Hospital, where I witnessed first hand the devastating effects of delirium and took a lead role in rehabilitation post-critical illness. After 10 years as a nurse practitioner on the critical care outreach team at Sunderland, I moved to South Tees NHS Foundation Trust in 2013, continuing in a senior practitioner role on the critical care outreach team at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough for another five years and supporting post-critical care follow-ups. Delirium is very common in critically ill patients and can be extremely distressing for patients and their loved ones even leading to PTSD post critical illness.

I have a passion for holistic patient care, particularly addressing emotional and psychological needs. I made the move to General Practice in 2018 as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, where my role involved home visits to vulnerable, elderly and housebound patients as well as dementia and frailty reviews. Personal experience with grandparents living with frailty and my grandmothers Alzheimer’s disease deepened a commitment to championing best practice for elderly people and those living with dementia. In March 2022, I became Lead Dementia Nurse at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, taking on the challenge of improving dementia care and adherence to best evidence based practice across the trust.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I am an animal lover and in particular have a love for horses. I spend as much of my free time as possible with my children and horses. My daughter has also inherited the horse obsession.

Why did you choose to work in dementia:

I think there is a need to improve care for this vulnerable group of patients.
