Tell us a little about yourself:

I’ve recently started my first independent ECR post. My research interests are in the application of AI to address clinical problems, stratify disease and monitor health trajectories. I work in the field of neuroimaging-genomics, with a specialist interest in the immune mechanisms of accelerated brain ageing. I currently do a mix of tutorial teaching and research here at Oxford.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself:

I’m an ice-climber, caver and all-round outdoorsy soul. I love being outside no matter the elements.

Why did you choose to work in dementia research?

Ageing — and ageing well — is a privilege most people don’t consider until they’re confronted with its opposite. I’ve had the experience of both losing someone suddenly and a more protracted, painful sense of losing someone over time. I’ve also worked in primary care roles caring for people with dementia. I’ve seen and felt the impact that this has on individuals and the networks around them — professionally and personally. It’s an extremely motivating field to be working in, from multiple fronts!

What single piece of advice would you give to an early career researcher?

Let people help you. Keep asking for questions and advice. Others have walked in your shoes and had help too — don’t be isolated or afraid to reach out.

What book are you reading right now? Would you recommend it?

‘Kairos’ by Jenny Erpenbeck, the 2024 International Booker Prize winner. I picked it up because I was intrigued by the title (in ancient Greek, ‘Kairos’ means ‘the right or critical moment’)

Favourite ways to unplug and unwind?

Climbing, running, exploring, reading

Favourite film of all time?

Oh gosh no idea. I can’t give a favourite but I did enjoy the 2016 hit ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople’, set in New Zealand
